Isaiah Alarcon, 17, featured in the "Brat Camp" reality TV show was charged for allegedly spray-painting racial slurs on the street in front of a home.
"Isaiah-Angry-Punk" is the second teenager from the show (which was shot last winter) to get in trouble with the law this summer, even though the 50-day program is known for its "success at teaching kids better behavior." Brat Camp is seen on Wednesday nights and is only part way through its run. We can guess the outcome: most of the kids didn't get rehabilitated and went back to being punks.
, According to the news report, Isaiah told sheriff's deputies on July 29 that he used spray paint to scrawl the slurs on the street outside a black preschool teacher's home. He's been charged with interfering with the exercise of civil rights and damaging property. A teenage friend of Alarcon also faces the same charges, plus a charge of conspiracy. Both boys told deputies they didn't mean to cause any harm with the graffiti. If convicted, they each could get up to two years in jail and a $15,000 fine.
In "Brat Camp" the snarling troubled teens are taught "discipline" (NOT!) at a 50-day wilderness camp in Oregon, which the show keeps referring to as a desert. And that's a geography lesson to most Americans who had no idea lushy foresty mountainy coastal Oregon had a "desert."
On the show, Nick "Tried to Stab Twin" is my favorite. No wait, Sean "Steals From Mom" is. Those are the discriptive tags given to all reality show participants to sum up their faults and problems in four words or less. But in last week's show, the hippie counselors, who give themselves names like "Mountain Wind" and "Big Bear," had a ceremony to stick stupid names on the kids like "Painted Butterfly." Forget the hippy names, their TV tags are the best! Sean-Steals-From-Mom. Nick-Tried-To-Stab-Twin. Isaiah-Angry-Punk. That's more revealing than a sick name like "Emerging Frog."
Derrick is the only really disturbing one to watch on the show, because he doesn't belong with the others. He's 14 and has ADD, a medical condition, so he's not a troubled teen. He stopped taking his medication because he thought it stunted his growth! He's smaller in size and has trouble keeping up with the others. You gotta feel sorry for the kid.
