"Can you hear me now?" "Can you hear me now?" Aussie "Cinderella Man" actor and phone tosser Russell Crowe is rumored to be nearing an agreement to pay a New York hotel clerk $11 million to drop charges of assault against him. Ka-Ching!!
In the 4 a.m. incident on June 6, Crowe went to tell the Mercer hotel staff of his phone troubles, returned to his room to fetch the phone, then went back to the front desk where he threw it at Nestor Estrada, 28, cutting the clerk on the right cheekbone. "It's absolutely worthless," Crowe reportedly told him. "So I figured I'd come down and give it back to you." The Gladiator actor also allegedly hurled a ceramic bowl at the clerk before assuming a karate stance.
, Britain's Daily Mail quoted a source saying a video of the temper tantrum exists and it would almost surely result in Crowe being convicted. A conviction could cause the actor to lose his green card and his ability to work in the United States, where he earn about $25 million per film. (There's also potential jail time involved but pfffft to that scenerio. Don't believe it. Not for throwing a phone.)
The Manhattan district attorney's office said that it would be highly likely the criminal charges against Crowe could be dropped before the September 14 court date if the matter is settled out of court.
Even if the rumored figure of $10.8 million (£6 million) is highball - and it probably is - Estrada could still wind up with a very large settlement. And whatever the cost, expect others to try and bait Crowe into a fight in the hope of receiving a 3-stitch cut and a shot at $11 million buh. Cuz if a lowly hotel employee can find a better lawyer than multi-millionaire Russell Crowe, this guy is primed for picking.
