He hasn't been dating anyone in particular since he and Garner broke up, he says, and doesn't mind revealing that he's "enjoying not having to spend weekends shopping at flea markets" now that he and Jen are no longer an item.
The hunky actor, who plays special agent Vaughn on Alias, also doesn't mind talking up "Alias," and says there will be big bang of an ending for the May 25 season finale. "There's a big cliffhanger — I think the best we've had," Vartan told USA Today. "Just when you think (Vaughn and Sydney) are going down easy street ... hello! It's something so monumental. When I first read it, I thought, 'No way!' "
The actor was born in France and grew up there. He was once a celebrated soccer player and he insists life in Europe has given him a good perspective on Hollywood. He says, "I grew up on a farm in the tiny Normandy village of Fleury, with 300 people, and it's literally a different world. I'm sure that in a way it's affected me. For one thing I'm cleaner than they are."
And we didn't know he could be such a funny guy. In the May 23 issue of Newsweek, Vartan explains his Faux French background to reporter Marc Peyser:
Newsweek: Do you hate when interviewers get excited because you're French?
Vartan: The funny thing is I'm actually a Polish Jew who happens to be born in France. My mom is Polish and my dad is Bulgarian. I don't have an ounce of French blood. But I work it.
Newsweek: How did you come to the United States?
Vartan: I was 17 and had dropped out of high school, and there was a thing called mandatory military service in France, so I thought that would be a good time to move in with my mom in California. There were six or seven years where I wasn't allowed back into France or I would have been arrested by the military police. That was kind of exciting.
Newsweek: Wait—you dropped out of high school?
Vartan: I don't condone it. Children, stay in school.
Newsweek: But you got your GED, right?
Vartan: I did not. Lazy and a deserter. I'm a real catch.
Newsweek: Enough about you. Is Jennifer Garner pregnant?
Vartan: I don't know. I heard it for the first time yesterday on a talk show. She's in Canada and I'm in New York, and we haven't spoken.
Newsweek: How about J. Lo and Jane Fonda. Who's the bigger diva?
Vartan: No one believes me, but I was so delighted at how incredibly nice they were.
Newsweek: C'mon. Really?
Vartan: I was so surprised, only because of all the crap you hear about people. It could easily have been a complete power trip, and it wasn't at all.
Newsweek: Who has the bigger posse?
Vartan: Jennifer does. It's not that big, but it's bigger than Jane's.
