First of all, when it comes to suspense movies, "Hide and Seek" falls short of expectations in terms of shock value, but it still managed to win the weekend at the box office. Cute but creepy Dakota Fanning plays a cute but creepy kid who finds an "imaginary" friend after her father, Robert De Niro, moves them from the city to a remote creepy house. (The required premise for ghost movies.) It has some surprises, but the movie is slow. The wierdest surprise of the film's release: That Dakota Fanning's name is actually OVER the title on print ads -- along side of De Niro's. Pretty lofty heights for a ten year old.
Despite its weekend box office success, the movie has problems. A Hollywood insider reported seeing De Niro and his wife at a screening of "Hide and Seek" and the actor got up and walked out half way through it. When the lights went up, someone asked his wife where he went and she said that he couldn't stand it. He said it was the worst movie he had ever seen.
