HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: Dogtown and Z-boys came out in 2002 but I watched the DVD over the weekend (about 3 times) and wanted to bring it up because it's one of the best documentaries I've seen in a long time.
It's awesome aggression and style, fury, untamed individualism, and a free-spirited determination to tear, shred and rip is relentless. This documentary is so fast-paced, that you don't even need to be a skateboard (or surfing) enthusiast to be totally engrossed from start to finish.
,
The soundtrack is also incredible, featuring classic stuff from: Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, The Buzzcocks, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zepplin, Ted Nugent, Pink Floyd, Jan & Dean, Iggy & the Stoogies, Thin Lizzy, and Neil Young. (although I don't recommend buying the soundtrack CD since it doesn't cover the movie adaquately. Unfortunately due to copyright issues or whatever, the soundtrack CD has only about 12 of the 30+ songs from the movie.)
The Zephyr Skating Team, collectively, and individually, revolutionized the culture of skateboarding, all while draining and riding empty swimming pools during the Southern California drought years. Their vert skating later gave birth to the half-pipe style. The documentary focuses on three Z-Boys who became superstars in the sport: Stacy Peralta, Tony Alva, and Jay Adams. You can make the arguement that their influence is directly responsible for the current rise of "extreme sports."
Dogtown and Z-Boy is narrated by Sean Penn and shows fantastic movie footage (much of it shot by co-writer and highly influential surf/skate artist/writer Craig Stecyk), still photographs, and recent interviews with many of the boys who are now grown up. Combined with the high-powered soundtrack and great editing, the movie is 90 minutes of unadulterated pleasure. It's a hardcore documentary that recaptures a fleeting moment in history that will never be repeated, when a group of no-account skateboard outlaws rewrote the rules of the game and changed the way the skateboard was ridden forever.
Visit the Official Dogtown website, then get a rental copy -- or buy a copy from Amazon (about $15US) but don't miss Dogtown and Z-Boys. This movie smokes!
