We live in interesting times. . . San Francisco rats will be spending Christmas in their new homes, instead of chillin' at the animal shelter.

Rat lovers, rat owners, rat support groups, rat rights groups and rat do-gooders -- this call is going out to you!
, Three huge crates of the little beasties were left abandoned on a porch on Haight Street and the rats were brought to the shelter, so there's plenty of 'em to go around.

If you want one of these lovable pets for your very own, you'll have to fill out the rat forms, answer rat questions and present an acceptable rat cage for inspection. The rat adoption form has 114 questions including your "hopes and expectations" for your rat.

Oh, and there's a fee of $10 bucks, which shelter employees hope will discourage any narly snake owners wanting to score some inexpensive vittles for their slitherins.

Reason number 1,012 to avoid driving in Boulder

Getting caught speeding in the city and county of Boulder, Colorado, is about to get very expense, if the City Council's plan to increase traffic fines gets final approval.

If you're caught speeding 4 to 19 mph over the posted speed limit, you'll pay $500 (That FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS!) and if you are speeding at 20 mph or more over the posted speed limit, you'll be slapped with a $1,000 ticket.

THAT'S ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS for doing 50 in a 30 mph zone (which is the way Boulderites usually drive.) The current rates are $100 and $300. City administrators hope the new fines will make motorists slow done.

I'd advise everyone to avoid the People's Republic of Boulder at all times . . .

But only Martha is Wickedly Perfect

If you think any domestic diva can hold up to the great Martha Stewart , check out the 12 contestants lined up for the next reality show.

CBS will reveal "Wickedly Perfect," a domestic showdown hosted by Joan Lunden, on January 6th. The 12 wannabe Marthas will live together in a New England estate, where they will try to prove who is the hostest with the mostest.

, They will be critiqued by celebrity chef and Food Network host Bobby Flay, stylist David Evangelista and "Sex and the City" author Candace Bushnell in a variety of challenges in entertaining, decorating, cooking, baking, sewing and crafts.

After 10 episodes, the last diva standing (of the original gang of 12, including 9 women and 3 guys) will win. The prize will include a development deal for a lifestyle-oriented TV show, 6 appearances on "The Early Show" and a publishing deal with Atria Books.

The show debuts Jan. 6, filling the time slot left empty by "Survivor."

North Korea Boasts It's AIDS-Free

SEOUL – North Korea has expelled 27 foreigners it said tested positive for HIV and claimed the country remains "free of AIDS."

North Korea is "the only country on the earth that has no AIDS-related patients." the Koreans claimed.

Sure, and you can bet that if they found any who were, they were all shot, or were starved to death . . .

Cruise Tips $5000 at Dairy Queen

LEXINGTON, Va -- Tom Cruise walked into a Virginia Dairy Queen and saw a jar with a photo of local resident Ashley Flint and her sad story. Flint was in a go-cart accident in September and the injuries created a mountain of hospital bills. So Cruise left $5,000 IN CASH in the jar.

, Cruise is in Virginia filming his new movie, "War of the Worlds." He was accompanied by director Steven Spielberg and an entourage of about 20 others when he made the stop at the Dairy Queen.

It's a cool story for the holidays that a celeb can dump the wad of CASH he happens to be carrying in his wallet, on a moment's notice for a fellow soul in need.

Apparently, Spielberg's cash must have stayed put in his wallet . . .

Britney Book Report Sells for $1,900 at Auction

And just think, the buyer could have picked up a well-written book report online, by a pro writer, for $9.95 . . .

But then it would have been written by Britney Spears, a budding literary genius. But $1,900 is what someone paid for a report Spears did as a child on the book "Raymond's Run." It sold over the weekend at Christie's auction house in New York. It was expected to sell for far less.

They're Shades, They're an MP3, They're . . .

the new concept Oakley Thumb MP3 Sunglasses.

A USB connection lets you transfer music to these sunglasses, where built-in earbud headphones let you listen to in. A cool concept, but I'm thinking they look kind of clunky, but they wouldn't be so bad under a hat or helmet. But I have to ask, will they still work after they come flying off your face when you smack a landing on your board?

At $395 for the 128 MB version, and $495 for the 256 MB version, they ain't cheap.

What I Learned In School

A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick at a private school. They would apply the lipstick in the restroom. After they put on their lipstick they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of lip prints. The custodian would remove lip marks from the mirror each night. The girls would put them back the next day.

Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the girls restroom and met them there with the custodian. The principal explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night.

To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the custodian to show the girls how much effort was required. He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and used it to clean the mirror.

Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror.
